Finding Confidence and Calm: Mason's Journey at Bristow Center

Member (Student) Interview 1

So what's your name, Bud? Mason What is your favorite thing to do when you come here? The snacks at the end. That makes complete sense. We do have amazing snacks. So you have a lot of siblings that come here. Yeah. Do you feel like your being at home is a little bit less crazy ever since you started coming to the center? Yeah. How so? Because I can handle my emotions better. Like when I get angry because, like, they, like, made fun of me or something. I can just calm down faster than I used to be able to. I love that Mason and the way you just said that. I could tell you that you've come. You've climb mountains. Now, how is the homework routine going after school? I'm very curious. It's going a lot better. I can do it as soon as I get home, and then I have time to do what I need. And one because time management is hard, right? But now you understand that sometimes when Mom asks us to do something, it's in our best interests. Yeah. What's it like to come and interact with the different types of kids here? Were you nervous to join a group at first? Yeah. And then once I got to know the kids is better because then I. Then I can see what they're working on, too. Was it comforting to see other kids that were like you? Yeah. And to see that you're not alone. Yeah. And to be a part of that group. Yeah. Roger that. Would you have been able to initiate, maintain and just confidently have these types of conversations a few months ago? You think? No. You've come so far. I'm so proud of you. Made look at you. I can't avoid having you back. Pretend like you are my baby. Yeah, I think I agree with that statement. And I am so proud of you. Look at how you're able to just verbalize this. Would you would you have been able to initiate, maintain and just confidently have these types of conversations a few months ago, you think? No, I think I agree with that statement and I am so proud of you.

Every child's journey towards self-improvement is unique and filled with its own challenges and victories. At Bristow Center, we celebrate these individual journeys as they unfold. Today, we're sharing Mason's story—a narrative of personal growth, better emotional management, and newfound confidence.

When asked about his favorite thing at the Bristow Center, Mason's immediate response was “the snacks at the end.” But as we delved deeper, it became clear that while the snacks are great, the real value comes from much more than just the tasty treats.

Mason notes that life at home has become "a little bit less crazy" since he started attending the center. He attributes this change to his improved ability to handle emotions. "When I get angry because, like, they made fun of me or something, I can just calm down faster than I used to be able to," Mason explains. This significant shift in emotional regulation has made daily interactions smoother and more enjoyable for him and his siblings.

Discussing his after-school routine, Mason shares that homework is going much better now. "I can do it as soon as I get home, and then I have time to do what I need," he says. This improvement in time management has allowed Mason more freedom and less stress in the evenings, contributing to a healthier daily routine.

Initially, Mason was nervous about joining a group at the center. However, getting to know the other kids has made a big difference. "It's better because then I can see what they're working on too," he remarks. Seeing other kids facing similar challenges has been comforting for Mason and has helped him feel less alone.

Reflecting on his progress, Mason admits that just a few months ago, he wouldn't have been able to initiate or maintain conversations as confidently as he does now. "You've come so far. I'm so proud of you," the interviewer notes, acknowledging Mason's impressive development.

Mason's story is a powerful testament to the positive impact that the Bristow Center can have on a child's life. His journey from nervousness to confidence, from frustration to calm, highlights the transformative experiences we aim to provide for every child.
